Dear Friend, The amputee population in Nebraska is currently facing reduced coverage from insurance companies.
We are seeing these large insurance companies putting annualized caps as low as $1,000 per year for prosthetic devices. Some companies have gone so far as limiting one prosthesis per life time. Even though Medicare has not put these limits in currently, Medicare pays attention to what the insurance companies are doing and may impose these limits in the future. The amputee community is a small group with little organization. Thus the insurance companies find it an easy coverage to cut knowing there will not be much objection. However, a group of amputees, friends and relatives, along with prosthetic providers across Nebraska and the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA), have started the process of asking the Nebraska Legislature to put a bill in place for Prosthetic Parity. This state law will require health insurance companies doing business in Nebraska to provide prosthetic services as medically necessary. Currently six states have passed a Prosthetic Parity law, with more than 15 states currently working on this legislation. We need your help and your voice. We need amputees, relatives, friends, physicians, and health professionals to join this group in order for us to form a strong united group to work towards the passing of this legislation. Please contact our office (by phone, by fax, by mail, by e-mail) to let us know we can count on your support. As we get further down the road in this process, we will need people to write letters, contact state senators, testify before legislative committees, and in general, be a part of this collective group. There will be something for everyone to do in working on this legislative process. Please contact us by June 18 if you will be a part of this combined voice to address this very important cause. We need everyone’s support. Talk to your family and friends – will they be willing to join this group? With everyone’s efforts, we will be successful in showing our state senators a law is necessary to continue the insurance coverage for prosthetic devices as are medically necessary. Please contact us today with your support. Thank you. Sincerely, Jason Dean, CP 402-489-2200 office 402-489-2214 fax
