Re: Prosthetic legislation update October 22, 2007
Dear Friend, We‘re writing to update you on the status of the efforts related to the proposed prosthetic coverage bill we talked about earlier this summer. We are beginning to see some insurance companies putting annualized caps as low as $2,500 per year for prosthetic devices. Some companies have begun to put lifetime caps on prosthetic benefits. The amputee community is a small group but we have begun to organize. A group of amputees, friends and relatives, along with prosthetic providers across Nebraska, have formed the Amputee Coalition of Nebraska (ACN), and have started the process of asking the Nebraska Legislature to put a bill in place for prosthetic coverage. This state law will require health insurance companies doing business in Nebraska to provide those prosthetic services that are medically necessary. Currently seven states have passed a Prosthetic Parity law, with more than 25 states currently working on this legislation. We have hired a lobbyist, drafted a bill and begun to meet with Senators to find support. We need your help and your voice. We need amputees, relatives, friends, physicians, and health professionals to join this group in order for us to form a strong united group to work towards the passing of this legislation. Please contact your prosthetic provider or one of the members of the ACN (by phone, by fax, by mail, by e-mail) to let us know we can count on your support. The contact information for ACN is sent with this note. As we go down this road, we will need people to write letters, contact state senators, testify before legislative committees, provide financial support and in general, be a part of this collective group. There will be something for everyone to do in working on this legislative process. Please contact us ASAP if you are willing to be a part of this combined voice to address this very important cause. We need everyone’s support. Talk to your family and friends – will they be willing to join this group? With everyone’s efforts, we will be successful in showing our state senators a law is necessary to continue the insurance coverage for prosthetic devices which are medically necessary. Please contact us today with your support. Thank you.
Sincerely, Steven Huggenberger Chair of the Amputee Coalition of Nebraska ACN Executive Committee members & contact info:
